Emanuel Haldeman-Julius : Pocket Series and the Little Blue Books

Custom Printing of Pamphlets

The following is a reproduction of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius' reply to a question submitted by a reader, as published in Questions & Answers, 16th series, 1939, pp. 112-114. Several things in his reply will be of interest to collectors and historians, most notably the names of the various tradespeople employed at the Haldeman-Julius factory, and the insights into content guidelines and associated costs for a variety of pamphlet formats.

I see that you print pamphlets for persons that want to pay for their own printing. I have a book of short essays which I would like to have printed in pamphlet form along the lines of your Little Blue Books. Are you able to give quick service? I know how printers dawdle.

Cover of Questions & Answers, 16th series. There's no dawdling in the Haldeman-Julius plant. Let me give you an example of our efficiency. In Wednesday's noon mail we received from Joseph Jayko, Adams, Mass., his manuscript of about 7,000 words, entitled "The Trapper's Pocket Guide," which he wanted me to turn into a 32-page booklet similar to the Little Blue Books. He enclosed $75 to pay for the first 1,000 and $10 to pay me for the labor of editing the Ms. in order to eliminate errors in grammar, construction, spelling, punctuation, style, etc. I went to work at 1 P.M., and after finishing the first few pages I got the linotype operator, Mr. Ray Newbery, busy on the type-setting. I kept ahead of him, feeding him pages faster than he could set them. By the following noon the booklet was set. Proofreaders tackled their end of the job and in a few hours the galleys were read and corrected, all bearing the much-sought OK's that printers like so much. Mr. Newbery then paged the type, set folios, title-page, and put the finished pages in the form. Next morning, the job went to press, where Mr. Elmer Inman did his stuff. By 10 o'clock it was finished. It then went to the bindery, where it was folded. Meanwhile, our job-pressman, Mr. Homer Combs, printed the cover, which was delivered to the bindery, where it was put on the booklet and stitched. Then it was trimmed and ready for immediate shipment to the customer. We were finished at noon, Friday. That means we gave only 16 working hours to Mr. Jayko's job of printing. By the way, in his letter ordering the work he mentioned that he wished we could turn the booklet out in three weeks. Well, we did it in two working days. And, by the way, no one broke a leg in putting the little job through the shop. There was no shouting, or hysteria, or jitters. Each department took the job in its stride. No dawdling there. We can do the same thing again and again, because we know how, having printed more than 200,000,000 pamphlets. We have the help that knows how, including an efficient bindery, which is run under the supervision of "Doc" Holler, who has sent hundreds of millions of pieces of printed matter through his department without noise or excitement.

The Haldeman-Julius plant is the best of its kind in the world, and it is available to the general public for pamphlet job printing. In the pamphlet field, we offer the following prices and styles:

32 pages. 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Same make-up, stock, covers, type size, etc., as in our famous Little Blue Books, except that we put your own name, etc., on the cover and title page. In this style we use 8pt, 9pt, or 10pt type, as our judgment decides, in order to make good typographical effect and at the same time get the material into the 32 pages allowed. It takes 7,500 words. or less, to fill that much space. Do not make your manuscript more than 7,500 words, if you want the booklet to be like one of our 32-page Little Blue Books. If you have fewer words, we use our own judgment about larger face of type. It is not necessary for you to read the proof, because we employ only the finest experts in this field and are more than able to handle this difficult job for you, thereby saving much time, effort and expense on your part. Send us your manuscript typed or carefully written only on one side of the paper, which do not roll, but ship flat, preferably in a large envelope or tied in a flat package.
